The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t an easy show to watch, but it’s one that really hooks you in once you start it. The Hulu series, which is adapted by the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood, first introduced us to the disturbing world of Gilead in 2017.

Now heading into season 5, our fierce heroine June is still fighting the totalitarian society. But thankfully she’s safe in Canada. For now, it seems at least. The synopsis and teaser trailer seem to hint that Gilead’s influence may begin to bleed into Canada.

Speaking of blood, in case you needed a reminder, in the final moments of the season 4 finale we saw the satisfying death of Fred Waterford. June, Emily, and other former handmaids chased him through the forest and beat him to death. We end with Serena opening an envelope, which contains’ Fred’s wedding ring and ring finger.

We’ve got some questions heading into the fifth season – what’s going to happen to June now, is Nick really married, and are those in Canada really safe from Gilead’s clutches? Thankfully, there’s not much more time to wait until we get all these answers!

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 release date

The fifth season debuts Wednesday, Sept. 14 with the first two episodes on Hulu. One new installment will drop each week until the finale. The streaming service hasn’t announced how many episodes we can expect this season. They’ve been either 10 or 13 episodes in past seasons.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 synopsis

Heading into the fifth season, we’re going to see June face the consequences for killing Commander Waterford. At the same time, she’s going to struggle to redefine her identity and purpose. Newly widowed Serena will try to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence starts to creep into Canada.

In Gilead, Commander Lawrence will be hard at work trying to reform Gilead and rise in power with the help of Nick and Aunt Lydia. And, of course, June, Luke, and Moira will continue to fight the oppressive patriarchal society from a distance as they continue to try to save and reunite with Hannah.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 cast

Almost all the cast members from season 4 will be back to reprise their roles. Of course, leading lady Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, and more will be back!

Check out the cast members returning for season 5 below:

  • Elisabeth Moss as June
  • Yvonne Strahovski as Serena
  • Max Minghella as Nick
  • O-T Fagbenle as Luke
  • Samira Wiley as Moira
  • Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence
  • Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
  • Madeline Brewer as Janine
  • Amanda Brugel as Rita
  • Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello
  • McKenna Grace as Esther Keyes

New characters in season 5:

  • Christine Ko as Lily, a Gilead refugee who now leads a Canada-based resistance movement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
  • Genevieve Angelson as Mrs. Wheeler, a well-off Canadian woman who admires Serena and what she’s accomplished, according to TVLine. This girl is going to be trouble, I can feel it!

Not expected to return:

  • Joseph Fiennes as Fred Waterford. While there’s a chance he might pop up in flashbacks, this commander is finally dead and gone. Good riddance.
  • Alexis Bledel as Emily. Back in May, the actress confirmed she wouldn’t be coming back as she felt like she “had to step away,” but is grateful for creator Bruce Miller and the cast and crew, according to Variety.
