Roswell, New Mexico season 4, episode 13, “How It’s Going to Be,” was such a bittersweet ending to an amazing series run. For four seasons, fans got to watch the pod squad grow, learn, and come together and battle various alien phenomena in their small town. The finale found them all celebrating a joyous occasion while also delving into a sad goodbye.

After Clyde took Rosa when she tried to use her abilities to interrupt his frequency during his attack, the team struggled to find them.

With no clues to their whereabouts, Bonnie had her own theory. She thought Clyde’s plan was to harness Rosa’s regenerative DNA in order to bring the map back to life that would take him home.

Since Liz’s memory is failing, she calls for Allie Meyers to aid her and Kyle in creating a serum that would help her take on Clyde. Allie is happy to help, even getting a crash course in the history of their alien alliances in the meantime.

Roswell, New Mexico season 4, episode 13 says goodbye

Maria, having figured out that Dallas helps her to feel safe when she is using her astral powers, calls him for help to locate Rosa. Even though he’s able to find them, Clyde escapes after knocking Shivani unconscious once Rosa’s work is done. Shivani learned the hard way that Clyde used her desire to save her daughter to get what he wanted on his own.

Max, having learned through Isobel that he was supposed to be the key to keeping Oasis’s energy alive, works with Liz in order to stop Clyde once and for all. With Clyde gone, this allows them to enjoy a wedding.

Alex and Michael marry, an event over a decade in the making. Michael even performs a song on the guitar for his new husband, who himself has decided to change his name to Guerin, showing his union with Michael and how he wants their legacy to grow.

It was a beautiful glimpse into their new lives together, while also bittersweet in some ways. Since this was the series finale, we did get to see other couples in the spotlight. With Isobel and Kyle finally making a go of it, it’s an exciting time marred by the fact that fans won’t get to see them. Maria and Dallas also give in to their growing connection, their chemistry positively sizzling on the dance floor at the Malex wedding.

As for Liz and Max, well, another stumbling block is upon them. Max found out through Maria astral projecting him to Oasis that the planet is dying. He’s ready to harness his abilities and help save his home planet. It’s not something he wants to do, to return, but he feels he has to. Despite her disappointment, Liz understands his reasons.

After a talk with Allie about not letting her love go up in flames again, Liz goes to see Max off at the portal. Max, incredibly, knew about the ring Liz had been trying to give him and he takes it from her. He puts it on her finger, a promise to return so they can be married.

Max doesn’t go alone, though. After sharing a kiss with Maria, Dallas comes to join Max in his own quest for answers. With this final goodbye, as Liz watches them leave while Kyle and Isobel enjoy time together and Michael and Alex go off on their honeymoon, it’s a final farewell to the pod squad we’ve come to know and love for four years.

Roswell, New Mexico season 4, episode 13 did, indeed, allow for some happy endings. However, there was also the knowledge that there are loose ends that were made. If the show had come back, no doubt would we have seen Max and Dallas do what they could on Oasis before coming home to their loved ones. It’s hard to believe that this is how it all ended.
