Oil stopped working properly in Last Light, but it turned out to be man-created. Here’s a look at the Last Light ending explained for all.

Last Light started with Andy Yeats (Matthew Fox) out in the Middle East trying to figure out what was going on with the oil. His wife Elena (Joanne Froggatt) and son Sam (Taylor Fay) were in Paris for surgery on Sam’s eyes, while his daughter Laura (Alyth Ross) remained in London. The family would soon need to find their way back to each other as the world shut down around them.

Mika (Amber Rose Revah) made it clear that there was something bigger going on. It turned out that man created the oil crisis, and Andy was connected in some way. He and a friend had written a paper 25 years ago about a bacteria that could eat oil. However, Andy ended up going the route of everyone else in the world when he met Elena and had a family.

Because of this paper, Mika has Andy arrested as soon as he lands in England. Elena and Sam get back to England but are detained despite being British citizens. Fortunately, Andy had previously had Laura take some photos of documents and that would help him prove his innocence.

Last Light ending explained

So, who was behind the oil crisis? It turns out that it was Andy’s former friend. Tobias Heller (Tom Wlaschiha) is the mastermind behind it all. He runs an eco-warrior group and started Apocalypse Watch. The aim is to protect the environment by preventing oil from working properly.

Tobias then kidnaps Laura to lure Andy to him. Laura is surprised to find out that her father used to be an environmentalist, and she does want to help the environment so ends up being a willing participant in Tobias’s actions. It’s only when Andy gets to her that she realizes that she doesn’t want to cause the deaths of thousands, and that’s what “Last Light” is going to create.

Andy has the ability to create a virus to kill the bacteria that are killing all the oil. Because he kept Andy preoccupied, Andy hasn’t been able to do that, and Tobias kills himself when the British government arrives so justice can’t be served.

The apocalypse begins. Oil no longer works, and now everyone needs to hope that Andy can get the virus against the bacteria out to be able to turn the world back to normal. We don’t see if that happens by the end. Instead, Andy and his family are spotted riding horses into the sunset as if they’re going to embrace this new world with their bonds fixed.

The good news, though, is that Sam’s surgery is able to happen. He gets his sight back.
