Reboot series review: One of the funniest shows of the year
By Ricky Valero
We have a new original series to stream on Hulu in Reboot. Is the show worth checking out when it releases? I share my thoughts on the entire series and let you know.
Reboot follows an early 2000s family sitcom that Hulu has rebooted and their cast must adapt to modern-day issues while dealing with unresolved problems from the show’s past. The series stars Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, and Calum Worthy.
We’ve seen the reboots of so many different series over the last few years that the idea of a series based on a rebooted show being rebooted is an idea that I can get behind. I loved the concept, cast, and creator, so I was invested before watching the show.
Reboot is one of the funniest shows of the year
The show’s foundation may be built on the cast around the former crew, but the highlight of the series was the relationship between Gordon and Hannah. The father/daughter battle between these two came to a head on several fronts.
First is the internal struggle of Hannah trying to work with her father, who was absent her entire life. Then we have Gordon, who is trying to adapt to modern-day humor. Last we have them working together to make this show happen. I loved everything about these two. Paul Reiser and Rachel Bloom share incredible chemistry that makes it all work.
That’s not to say the rest of the cast wasn’t great, because they really are. Knoxville is the funniest I think we’ve ever seen him in any show or movie. Keegan and Greer are an absolute delight together throughout the entire show and Calum Worth is the perfect fourth wheel as the child star.
Speaking of blending the new with the old, you had some people that represent old age Hollywood (that still exist) and these new writers and when they come together, it shouldn’t work, but how they wrote this was pure genius. Another side of the writing I enjoyed was the evolution of child actors, actors that struggle to find success, and how it’s not as easy of a path as some think even after having one hit show. The show also touches perfectly on the stereotypes that can be put on actors.
Reboot might be one of the easiest binges of the year. The cast is brilliant, the writing is witty and funny and overall, it’s a fun time from start to finish. I would love to see season two of the series.
Reboot hits Hulu on September 20
