Are SPOILERS dead in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5?

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 wasted no time in sending us on a roller coaster of emotions. Are two characters dead already?

Caution: There are major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 premiere in this post.

We know nobody is really safe when it comes to The Handmaid’s Tale. At least, nobody that isn’t June, Serena Joy, or Aunt Lydia. When there are potential deaths, we immediately wonder if they’re going to lead to characters being written out or not.

The Season 5 premiere got us up to date with a few storylines. Some of them take place in Gilead, and we do head back to The Red Center for some time. Esther is there as a Handmaid now, and Janine wants to help her survive.

Well, survival isn’t really on Esther’s mind. She doesn’t want to be raped after already facing that as a Wife. She also doesn’t want to have a baby. This is a woman who will do anything to prevent it from happening.

What happens to Esther and Janine in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5?

Toward the end of the two episodes, Esther and Janine are talking on the beds. They’re even sharing food, and that should immediately raise questions. How would Esther manage to get food?

If you remember back to the beginning of Season 4, you’ll know that Esther knows her plants. Her Martha taught her, and Esther spent time poisoning her husband. Of course, she was going to put some poison in the food she smuggled in. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to avoid being posted somewhere, even if it means killing herself in the process.

However, she wants to kill someone else. Esther hates Janine, so it’s not surprising that she brought the contraband to Janine to share.

The end of the two episodes leaves us with both Esther and Janine bleeding out on the floor. Aunt Lydia and, what looked like, Aunt Elizabeth are there with them calling for help, but will hep get to them in time?

If we look at the trailer, we can assume that Esther will make it out. She’s cuffed to a hospital bed, suggesting that the doctors get to her. What about Janine, though?

In an interview prior to the season, there was a mention of Janine using up another one of her lives, so that would suggest she’ll make it. It seems a little anticlimactic for Janine to go this way, but then so did the train hitting Alma and Brianna after three seasons of them helping and standing by June.
