Goodnight Mommy review: An attempt was made
By Sandy C.
Horror fans couldn’t be more exited about spooky season finally arriving. Horror movies are already being released, with Pearl in theaters this weekend and Goodnight Mommy on Prime Video. One of these movies is a must-watch feature, the other can be skipped. By the title of this post, I’m sure you can guess which movie we are referring to.
Goodnight Mommy follows twin brothers Elias and Lukas (real life brothers Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) as they arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) home after being with their father for some time. Their mother has always been loving, attentive, and caring, but there’s something off about her this time. For starters, her face is covered in bandages. Mother explains she recently had cosmetic surgery and needs to keep the bandages on for a few more days.
Mother shares new rules the boys need to follow, which includes staying away from the barn and her bedroom. And when it’s time for bed, she refuses to sing for them, something she always did before. The boys begin to question if this is really their mother or an imposter. Check out the trailer below:
Is Goodnight Mommy a good horror movie to watch?
I’ll admit it, I didn’t have high hopes for Goodnight Mommy when I checked out the trailer. But it’s a horror movie and it’s time for some Halloween chills! All this to say, I was going to watch the movie regardless, I like to give all movies a fair chance. Not to mention, Goodnight Mommy is streaming on Prime Video, so what do we have to lose when we can see the movie from the comfort of our own home and free snacks? Well, that all depends on you.
While I can’t say I highly recommend the movie over another horror, Goodnight Mommy does have some things to love. The score from Alex Weston is the best part about it, but the acting is very well done, the two young actors are very talented. Finally, you have to love the visuals. Without giving away any spoilers, there is one scene in particular that will catch you off guard. Very cleverly done and the scariest scene (the only creepy scene) in the movie.
So what’s so terrible about the movie? Well, I wouldn’t say it’s terrible, it’s just not good. An attempt was made. If you’re really into horror movies, you’ll catch the movie’s “big twist” a mile away. And, honestly, it’s not even a great twist. After the reveal, if you continue watching hoping for something bigger, even another twist, prepare for disappointment.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it. You can watch the movie from home, a huge plus. And it is only about 90 minutes. To enjoy the movie, set your expectations low. For true chills, watch Pearl in theaters!
