If you aren’t in the loop, there’s another movie coming out of The Lion King franchise and it may be hitting theaters sooner than you think. Most people know The Lion King  (2019), while already having an audience due to the popularity of the 1994 traditionally animated film which spawned a slew of other films and a television series, had been harshly criticized due to it not being a shot-for-shot remake of the original.

Even though this became concern for audiences and critics alike, the film jettisoned to the top and became the highest-grossing animated film beating out the then-leader Frozen and grossed over 1.6 billion dollars internationally at the box office.

Thus leads us to present day, where a prequel film, aptly titled Mufasa: The Lion King will be making its way to theaters soon.

Mufasa: The Lion King release date

After much speculation, the film was teased at Disney’s D23 conference where it was confirmed that Mufasa: The Lion King release date is set for Jul. 5 2024 with Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) attached to direct.

Mufasa: The Lion King synopsis

The film will be told in two timelines with Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen to return as Timon and Pumbaa respectively to tell the story of Mufasa to a new lion cub as audiences watch his rise to royalty. Not much else has been announced regarding the storyline of the film but make no mistake, we’re bound to learn some more information about what you can expect before going to the theaters.

Mufasa: The Lion King cast

Audiences will be happy to know that the characters featured in the first live-action film will be reprising their roles for this upcoming feature including:
