September 23 weekend movies: Every new movie in theaters and streaming this weekend
By Ricky Valero
I know you all come here for my witty humor of an opening line, but I am tired, so the jokes on me. Below, we share the best new weekend movies to watch in theaters and available on streaming services that you won’t want to miss.
I love when we are heading into award season because we have some potentially great films to look ahead to. However, do we have two films that could be great but have some controversy surrounding them releasing this week that I can’t wait to watch them both. Let’s dive in.
Weekend movies to watch (and stream) today
- Avatar, (Re-release, Theaters)
- Don’t Worry, Darling, (Theaters)
- Blonde, (Netflix)
- Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy, (Netflix)
- On the Come Up, (Paramount+)
First up, we have the release of Don’t Worry Darling, which can potentially light up the award season with Oscar-nominee Florence Pugh leading the charge opposite Harry Styles. While there have been many rumors surrounding the behind-the-scenes of the film, the trailers have set the world on fire. I am looking forward to the press tour to see if we get any of the drama resolved. However, I hope for a good film because the story seems insane.
The other release is Blonde, which is a fictionalized chronicle of the inner life of Marilyn Monroe. The film stars Ana de Armas as Monroe, with Andrew Dominik writing (and directing) the movie based on the novel. The massive controversy around this one has been the NC-17 rating and Dominik coming out in MASSIVE defense of the story regardless of people not liking the light it puts on Monroe’s character. I, for one, am intrigued to see how it all plays out, but a good performance (and good film) could put de Armas in the Awards conversation.
What will you be watching this weekend? Will you enjoy a movie in theaters or streaming?
