Is HBO Max’s The Last of Us based on a video game?

AMC’s The Walking Dead can step aside, there’s a new post-apocalyptic drama that’ll soon be taking over, The Last of Us on HBO Max. When is the new series coming out? Who stars in it? Most importantly, what is The Last of Us about? Is it based on a video game? Here’s everything you need to know.

When it comes to video game adaptations, they aren’t always a hit. In fact, most often than not, these TV and movie projects are fails. There have, however, been a few successful projects, including The Witcher on Netflix and Sonic the Hedgehog. That said, HBO Max’s upcoming post-apocalyptic series is based on a video game, but we have high hopes for it!

The Last of Us on HBO Max is based on a video game

The upcoming series is based on the 2013 action-adventure video game of the same name. As we previously reported, the game was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Taking charge of the series, are Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, who are the co-creators, writers, directors, and executive producers. When is The Last of Us coming out on HBO Max?

An exact release date has not been announced, but the teaser trailer (above) does reveal that The Last Of Us will premiere in 2023. Our best guess is that it’ll be here early in the new year. Of course, as soon as we have a date from HBO, we’ll update this post!

What is The Last Of Us about?

The Last of Us will follow Joel and Ellie 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. When Joel is tasked with getting Ellie out of a quarantine zone, a brutal and heartbreaking journey ensues. Pedro Pascal will be taking on the role of Joel while Bella Ramsey portrays Ellie. Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, and Nico Parker also star.
