What is the Barney docuseries about?

Who knew a children’s television character could spark so much debate and hate? That’s what Peacock‘s upcoming new docuseries, I Love You, You Hate Me will explore. And it’s all about Barney.

There will be two episodes, each about an hour long. Both will be released on Wednesday, Oct. 12 on the streaming service. Taking charge behind the scenes is director Tommy Avallone. Trent Johnson takes on producing duties with Avallone, Rob Eric, Joel Chiodi, David Collins, and Michael Williams serving as executive producers.

When the big purple dinosaur comes to mind, you’d think it’s all positive, right? After all, Barney represented love, inclusion, and kindness. Well unfortunately with the show’s success, there was also a dark side that emerged, portraying the complete opposite.

What is the Barney docuseries about?

According to Peacock, I Love You, You Hate Me is a limited docuseries that chronicles the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur’s furious backlash, and what it says about the human need to hate. The episodes will show Barney-bashing frat parties, homicidal video games, YouTube videos of Barney plush toys being destroyed, among other incidents.

The Peacock synopsis reads:

"Something in American society broke into a million pieces, and it’s never been put together again… or is this just who we were all along?"

The trailer shows clips of the show and character’s creator Sheryl Leach, a glimpse of the sit-down interview with one of the actors who played Barney, Bob West, and how he became a target of death threats. Watch the trailer below:
