Do the Sanderson Sisters die in Hocus Pocus 2?
By Cody Schultz
No Halloween has been complete without at least one viewing of Disney’s cult classic Hocus Pocus. The film is part of many fans’ annual holiday traditions and holds a special place in the hearts of audiences across the globe.
For the longest time, fans could only dream of a sequel to the beloved classic… and then Disney announced its plans for a sequel nearly three decades after the original film was first released back in 1993.
After 29 years, the Black Flame Candle is lit once more leading to the resurrection of the Sanderson Sisters in Hocus Pocus 2. Following their defeat in the original film, the sisters are back and out for revenge this time determined not to be outwitted. Upon getting their hands on Book, Winifred sets out to cast a powerful spell so dangerous Book does its best to prevent her (or anyone) from casting it.
Trying to stop her before she can cast the spell and wreak havoc on Salem on All Hallow’s Eve are three high-school students, who must band together to save the day. But are they successful in doing so?
Hocus Pocus 2 ending explained
In the film’s closing act, Winifred has managed to gather all the ingredients needed for the powerful spell and defies Book’s wishes by casting the spell — not knowing the cost of doing so. By casting the spell, Winifred unknowingly sacrifices what is most sacred to her which happens to be her two sisters.
During an emotional scene, both Mary and Sarah begin to fade away out of existence right before Winifred’s eyes. It’s then that regret sinks in as Winifred realizes that the most important thing to her isn’t power, but her sisters who she can’t imagine living without.
Hoping to undo the spell, Winifred convinces Becca and her friends to use a spell in Book to help reunite her with her sisters — thinking the spell will bring them back from wherever they’ve disappeared. Instead, the spell sends Winifred off to be with her sisters and she soon fades away in a magical moment similar to her sisters.
It’s not entirely clear where the sisters go, but it seems to be implied that their essence is dispersed into the universe hinting that we’ve seen the last of the Sanderson Sisters. While it’s not entirely clear whether the trio died, what is certain is they’re reunited in the afterlife, whatever that might be in the Hocus Pocus universe.
