What is Emancipation starring Will Smith about on Apple TV+?

Actor Will Smith is taking on an important role in his new film, Emancipation. The Apple Original will be coming to theaters on Friday, Dec. 2 before streaming globally Friday, Dec. 9 on Apple TV+.

Alongside Smith the cast includes actors Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten, and Imani Pullum.

Antoine Fuqua takes on directing and executive producing duties for the movie. The production was written by William N. Collage. The leading actor also produces the film with Jon Mone, Joey McFarland, and Todd Black. James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner and Scott Greenberg serve as executive producers.

Emancipation centers around Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery using his wits, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family, Apple TV+ shares. It’s a triumphant story, but we’ll see Peter working hard to evade cold-blooded hunters and facing the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.

Inspired by true events, the latest Apple Original Films project comes from the real-life 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter.” They were taken during a Union Army medical examination. One picture, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping from his enslavers. The image contributed to the growing public opposition to slavery.
