NCIS season 20 episode 3 recap: Dr. Grace and Nick are in danger
NCIS season 20 episode 3, “Unearth,” certainly packed a punch for the characters we know and love. With two people in danger without anyone knowing, how did the team solve their newest case? Plus, Kasie was hard at work preparing for Ducky’s surprise birthday party. How did things work out for all involved?
The case the team were working with involved the murder of a man named Erik Nilsson, who worked in security for a Navy contractor. He had been stationed in Afghanistan before returning home. What made the case strang was that he was found with stones in his body.
They discovered one of the stones inside his body had some sort of design on it. Ducky had a connection to individuals who knew about ancient artifacts. They found out that there’s a curse attached to the lore and that anyone who steals the treasure will turn to stone.
It looked like Nilsson, along with a group of men he worked at for the company, had stolen important artifacts. The two other men involved, Ezra Moretti and Nate Holt, had gotten sent to prison and were now looking for a fourth man with a connection to Dr. Grace Confalone.
NCIS season 20 episode 3 recap: A case, a curse, and a body
Moretti and Holt were in the middle of abducting Grace when Nick showed up. He had originally had a session with her and had come back, only to find she was knocked unconscious. Nick managed to gain the upper hand until a gun was pulled on him.
Grace and Nick worked together to try to escape the cage they were locked in. Unfortunately, they were used as pawns in order to find the man they were looking for, Daniel Vega. He was the one who had the treasure and the men wanted it. To get Grace to cooperate, they shot Nick in the shoulder.
Eventually, the team figured out Grace and Nick were missing and were able to piece together the clues from Grace’s office to determine where they were. While they did find Nick, Grace was still with one of the men, who she took to the facility where Vega was being treated. He had been mentally scarred by his time in Afghanistan and was in treatment. Luckily for Grace, the team managed to get there in time to save both herself and Daniel.
This episode gave us a chance to also see Nick’s growth, from wanting to take care of his own business without help from anyone to realizing he can open up and ask for help from his team. It was a good episode to capture his relationship with his therapist and with his own healing and journey into no longer drinking.
The side plot for the episode focused on Kasie throwing Ducky a birthday party. It was a lighthearted time set against the case they were investigating. This was an interesting episode and it is always a joy to see Ducky on our screens. We’re looking forward to seeing more of him as time goes on.
