5 best horror movies to stream on Hulu
When thinking of Halloween, trick-or-treating, costume parties, and frightfully fun decor comes to mind. But for most people, horror movies are at the top of the list! That said, we’re here to share the best horror movies to stream on Hulu this Halloween season.
With so many streaming services available these days and even more titles to scroll through, it can feel overwhelming when you’re searching for the perfect movie to watch. But that’s where we come in.
5 best horror movies to stream on Hulu
1) Nightmare Alley
Nightmare Alley is a psychological thriller and horror film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro that’s set in 1940s New York City. It’s been described as dark, gorgeous, and intense thanks to its noir style and realistic violence. The story follows a carnival worker who tricks and swindles rich patrons, and then crafts a scheme to steal from a tycoon with the help of a psychologist — but that’s where things get wild.
Some reviewers consider the story to also fit in well with the crime genre, but the horror elements are front and center. With overwhelmingly positive reviews, Nightmare Alley is one of the best horror movies on Hulu available to stream.
2) Parasite
With an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, Parasite is absolutely one of the best horror films on Hulu. Though Parasite is described as being part of several different genres (from drama, to dark comedy, to psychological thriller), it is popular in Hulu’s horror genre category this Halloween season. Released in 2019 and directed by Bong Joon-ho, the South Korean film examines the darkness of greed and class discrimination in society by following two families at opposite ends of wealth.
We follow the poor family as they plot to infiltrate the home of an extremely wealthy family by getting hired for in-home jobs, but the charade can only last for so long without consequences. The film expertly uses horror elements in the final act, but the intensity also stems from its themes surrounding inequity.
3) Fresh
One of the top horror movies on Hulu, Fresh stars Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones. The comedy-horror thriller film directed by Mimi Cave was released earlier in 2022, and follows a new couple in their too-good-to-be-true relationship (spoiler alert: it is!). It’s both ridiculous and intense in the best way, with incredible performances from Stan and Edgar-Jones. Fresh was a breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and should definitely be on your watchlist this year (but maybe hold off on the popcorn or snacks during this one).
4) Run
Run is a twisted horror / thriller film released in 2020 starring Kiera Allen and Sarah Paulson. The story follows a teenager who is disabled and forced to spend most of her time at home, but things escalate when she starts to suspect that her mother has been keeping dark secrets from her. At its release, Run was Hulu’s most successful original film and is praised for its ability to be satisfyingly suspenseful and captivating. It’s one of the best horror movies on Hulu and leaves you with an unsettling feeling related to how the story examines its themes of manipulation and control.
5) Bad Hair
The only horror-satire movie on this list, Bad Hair is set in 1989 and follows a young woman who feels she must get a new weave in order to fit the standard look required for her to be successful in the music industry. The twist is that the hair, which is established as this status symbol, reveals itself to be the supernatural villain. Anyone who’s been forced to change something about their appearance to please others will be able to relate to the story, which gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “bad hair day.” The movie was written and directed by Justin Simien, who was an executive producer on Dear White People.
