Walker Independence: How did the Walkers get their name?
By Sabrina Reed
The Walker family have made their mark on The CW in such a short time. The Walker, Texas Ranger reboot rode onto our screens in 2021, introducing viewers to a modern western family drama on a network that had been full of superhero and supernatural shows.
It’s garnered so much attention that a spin-off prequel by the name of Walker Independence has begun airing its own brand of Texas justice. Set in the late 1800s, this series follows Abigail Walker, Cordell’s ancestor, whose husband was murdered right in front of her.
After being saved by the Apache, she makes her way to Independence, a town that’s finding its own footing in the west just like she is. However, when we meet Abby, Walker isn’t her last name. She’s Abigail Collins, a Bostonian and educator married to lawman Liam Collins.
So how did the Walker’s get their name if it didn’t come from Liam? Well, it’s not Abby’s maiden name. Here’s the piece of family history Walker Independence revealed!
How did the Walker family get their name?
The name Calian and his companions use to refer to Abby is Apache for Walks in Tall Grass. Prior to her waking, they didn’t know her name so they bestowed her with a moniker befitting how they found her. However, it’s not until Abby goes to the Western Union that she decides to adopt the name and Anglicizes it to turn it into her surname. When asked who she is, she says she’s Abby Walker.
It’s a smart move on her part considering no one in Independence knows of her connection to Liam, not even Sheriff Tom Davidson who she believes killed her husband. Now, with a new name, she can remain under the radar while pursuing her quest to bring the sheriff to justice.
