There is a lot in The Winchesters that breaks canon set in Supernatural. Is it possible that the series is set in an alternate universe?

Jensen Ackles promised us the untold love story of John Winchester and Mary Campbell in The Winchesters. That’s certainly what we’ve got. From the very beginning, it’s clear that Supernatural canon is being destroyed. Ackles has previously talked about this, sharing that he knows the story isn’t the one set in the OG series and that needs to be fixed.

But does it need to be fixed? Is there another way to explain all of the changes? Could it be found in another part of Supernatural canon?

Is The Winchesters an alternate universe?

During the final few seasons of Supernatural, we learned that there were alternate universes. Chuck (God) had written the Winchester story multiple times. In some cases, John Winchester died young and the brothers were never born. In others, the brothers had vastly different lives, even to the point of being upper-class snobs.

Is it possible that this is just another alternate universe? While the alternate universes were destroyed before the series end, we’re back in 1972 at this point. All those universes are still standing, and we could be entering into one of those right now.

This would explain why Millie Winchester knows about the Men of Letters and how John has the key to the bunker. It would explain why John knows about monsters when he didn’t know anything about them until after Mary’s death.

Alternatively, this could just be a fictional story from Dean, something that he wished could have happened. Of course, we could also find out that everything the brothers thought they knew wasn’t true at all. We did only hear the story from what Dean and Sam remembered John telling them, and John wasn’t the most reliable storyteller.

Opting for an alternate universe certainly makes the most sense. It will be the easiest way to fix the canon problems.
