HBO Max closes the door on Degrassi reboot
By Diana Nosa
It’s with a heavy heart that we report that HBO Max has decided to close the door on the highly anticipated Degrassi reboot.
As per Variety, the streaming service initially ordered 10 episodes of the upcoming installment.
From dealing with the weird physiological changes that come with puberty to navigating the many ways to ask your crush out on a date to even discussing sexuality and gender, similar to its predecessors, this installment aimed to traverse an abundance of topics beneficial to the young adult audience. Unfortunately, these important topics have been nipped in the bud before they could even see the light of day.
Why did HBO Max choose to announce the reboot only to cancel the title several months later? We speculate below.
Why did HBO Max cancel the Degrassi reboot?
Naturally, we will never know the many nuances behind why the streaming site decided against going forward with the reboot.
Some may say that the site simply didn’t care for the title now that shows like House of the Dragon and The White Lotus have generated tons of popularity. Others may attribute the cancellation to the site not properly allocating its budget to support the show financially. Some may even believe that the demand for Degrassi shifted once Euphoria season 2 finished airing.
While all of these theories are valid in their own right, we believe the true answer can be found in the details of the HBO Max and Discovery+ merge.
In addition to the Degrassi reboot, plenty of other titles have also gotten the boot. The most notable of these is Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Batgirl. But the merger has also seen to titles like Infinity Train, Generation Hustle, and many more fan favorites being removed from the site with no place to go next.
Since the cancellation news is still fresh, we have to wait to learn more details about why things ended up this way. Until then, all we can do is hope that another streaming service picks up the title soon.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding the now-canceled Degrassi reboot.
