The Blockbuster Trilogy game is a blast from the past for nostalgia seekers
By Sabrina Reed
Blockbuster, starring Randall Park and Melissa Fumero, is a Netflix original series that’s leaned into the impact of nostalgia to engage its audience. For millennials, Gen X, boomers, the silent generation, and the greatest one, the video rental store was the spot to pick up your favorite movies. This was a time when VHS tapes reigned supreme, the DVD had yet to take hold of the entertainment space, and the Blu-Ray didn’t exist.
On the show, Park’s character Yoon is the manager of the last Blockbuster Video store in the United States. The business is fighting to stay relevant in an industry that has moved on. But, in our reality, while the brick-and-mortar stores have closed, Blockbuster remains a piece of pop culture that made its mark on history.
As such, it should come as no surprise that its name lives on in party games like the Blockbuster Trilogy from Big Potato Games. If you’ve finished bingeing the Netflix series and want to enjoy more Blockbuster fun, simply want to take a walk down memory lane, or introduce your teens to a moment in time that they missed out on, this is the bundle for you!
The Blockbuster Trilogy brings nostalgia to game night fun
The Blockbuster Trilogy is three games in one–Blockbuster: The Party Game, Blockbuster Returns, and Blockbuster and Chill–that can be played together or individually. This family board game, which is best played with teams of two or more consisting of adults and teens, puts players’ knowledge of movies to the test.
Teams will have two rounds to win the game. First, one member from each team will go head-to-head with their opponent in a rapid fire round. Whether they draw ‘famous trilogies’ or ‘movies with a Zombie,’ they’ll need to be quick when it comes to the answers they shout while slapping the buzzer. The first person to run out of ideas loses.
That loss is costly because the winner gets to pick up six movie cards, give the hardest three to the other player, and keep the less challenging cards for themselves. This move triggers round two which is similar to Charades.
In 30 seconds, the player has to get their team to guess what’s on their cards correctly by way of three methods: acting the film out, making up a quote, or describing it with only one word. If the team is too slow their opponents will have an opportunity to steal, but if they answer quick enough they can steal from them instead. The first team to collect a film from every genre wins!
With a total of 200 classic movies and 60 category cards, the Blockbuster Trilogy game is classic fun for all movie lovers. It’s even designed to look like a VHS boxset with each game paying homage to VHS tapes and comes with a replica of the Blockbuster parking lot for that added bit of nostalgia. If you’re looking for timeless entertainment for you and your family, this is the board game you should add to your collection.
Blockbuster Trilogy is listed at $34.99 and is available on Amazon.
