Disney is taking us back to Genovia! The Princess Diaries 3 is reportedly in the works at the House of Mouse with Aadrita Mukerji attached as the film’s writer. Mukerji is known in the world of TV for her work on Supergirl, Reacher, and Scorpion. She currently has an overall deal with Universal Television and serves as co-executive producer on the NBC hit, Quantum Leap.

With The Princess Diaries 3, Mukerji will be using her talents to reconnect us with a comedic, heartfelt world centered on a royal family that fans fell in love with back in 2001. Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films in the series, will return as producer. Leslie Mann and Kate Upton have signed on as executive producer.

Based on the popular young adult book series by Meg Cabot, this franchise made Anne Hathaway a household name as children, teens, and adults became endeared to Mia Thermopolis, a teen girl who learns she’s a princess.

The film series, which also starred the legendary Julie Andrews, was previously a duology with audiences reuniting with Mia and Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement where the princess’ love interest was played by Chris Pine.

Now that the franchise has expanded into a trilogy, fans are excited to learn more about what’s to come from The Princess Diaries 3, here’s everything we know so far!

Does The Princess Diaries 3 have a release date?

No, the film doesn’t have a release date yet. It’s still in the early stages of development so the earliest we could expect the movie is in 2023, though 2024 wouldn’t be surprising either.

Is The Princess Diaries 3 a reboot or a continuation?

Deadline reports that the third film will be a continuation and not a reboot, but the plot is still under wraps with not even a crumb being shared on when the film will take place and who will be the lead though the assumption is that we’ll be following Mia on another royal adventure.

Will Anne Hathaway be a part of The Princess Diaries 3?

There has yet to be an announcement on Hathaway’s involvement in the film. However, the outlet also reports that the actress had the following to say about potentially returning to the role in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:

"I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."

Unfortunately, Andrews has a different position on the possibility.

Will Julie Andrews be a part of The Princess Diaries 3?

When asked if she’d like to revisit The Princess Diaries, Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter:

"I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [Marshall died in 2016.] [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible."

Considering the above, Andrews isn’t likely to play a significant role in the third movie even if she does choose to make a cameo appearance.

The cast hasn’t been announced for the film, we’ll keep you posted as news comes in.
