The Eternal Daughter age rating: Why is the movie rated PG-13?

The film The Eternal Daughter premiered earlier this month, but it seems to have fallen under the radar. If you missed it opening weekend and are curious about watching it, we share what The Eternal Daughter is about, why it’s rated PG-13, and how you can watch it ASAP.

For starters, The Eternal Daughter comes to us from A24, so you already know you are in for a ride full of surprises, thrills, and shocks. Released on Dec. 2, the movie stars Tilda Swinton as Julie (daughter), Tilda Swinton as Rosalind (mother), Joseph Mydell as Bill, and Carly-Sophia Davies as Receptionist, among others.

The Eternal Daughter follows the story of a daughter and her elderly mother visiting the mother’s family home. The location is now a hotel haunted by it’s mysterious past and buried secrets. The idea is to bond over nostalgia and old memories, but things instead take a drastic and horrifying turn.

Why is The Eternal Daughter age rating?

The movie is rated PG-13, which I found surprising. Not only because it doesn’t have the R-rating most A24 films are accustomed to, but because, despite being a mystery thriller, it’s PG-13. So why did it receive this rating? According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is PG-13 due to “some drug material,” and that is all that’s noted.

That said, now we know it’s a movie we can watch with our older kids, if we want. And for those who enjoy bigger horrors and thrills, don’t let the PG-13 rating discourage you. Critics have been praising Tilda Swinton’s performance since before the movie even came to theaters. Swinton is a brilliant actress, so I’m not surprised she killed both of these roles (and the mother and as the daughter).

The movie is playing in select limited theaters, but it is also available on VOD and can be purchased or rented on Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, and other services.
