New production The Last of Us premieres Jan. 15 on HBO and HBO Max. Those familiar with the video game the drama is based on are in for a treat! So is the project a series or movie?

The PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television-produced project stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nick Offerman as Bill, among others.

Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin created the series, as well as took on writing, directing, and executive producing duties. Executive producers attached to the production include Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam.

There’s a difference between setting aside a couple of hours for a film, or a few hours for a series. So which is it for the production? We’ve got the answer for your below!

The Last of Us is a HBO Original series. The show will have a total of nine episodes, set to premiere on Sunday, Jan. 15 on HBO at 9 p.m. ET. The drama will also be available to watch online on HBO Max.

The series takes us 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, according to a WarnerMedia press release. Hardened survivor, Joel, has an important job to do – smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of an “oppressive quarantine zone.” The duo will have to support each other and Joel will learn that this “small job” actually turns into a difficult journey.
