The wait is almost over! The Japanese thriller-mystery-action-drama Alice in Borderland has finally dropped the official Netflix trailer and the release date for its second season.

So, 2 years after the release of season 1, what is Alice in Borderland season 2 going to be about? When is it coming to Netflix? Here’s what we know!

Recapping Alice in Borderland season 1

If you haven’t re-watched Alice in Borderland‘s season 1 lately, let us briefly catch you up to speed. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Alice in Borderland, based on the manga series of the same name, is a dystopian survival series set in a parallel Tokyo. The protagonist, Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), finds himself in a dystopian world where games of life or death must be played every few days in order to win temporary ‘visas’ and prizes of playing cards.

After competing multiple times and then losing his two best friends in a game, he finds himself in the midst of a vicious militant uprising against a charismatic leader (Hatter) who uses hotel ‘residents’ to collectively gather all the playing cards, thinking this will lead to escape from the dystopian Tokyo. After Hatter is killed and a new witch-hunt game begins, there is a complete massacre.

We’re left primarily with four main protagonists — the problem-solving Arisu, the mountain climber Usagi, the mysterious Chishiya, and the martial artist Kuina. After uncovering the supposed ‘games masters’ all murdered in their surveillance room, the four are greeted onscreen by one of the hotel’s ‘executives’, Mira. She appears to be the higher power in the games, the Queen of Hearts, and announces that she will be giving a gift of even more, tougher games to the players that are left.

Alice in Borderland season 2 release date

After months of speculation, it appears as though we were right! In a previous article, we revealed that some eagle-eyed fans had spotted a December date in the corner of a promotional video for the Netflix Festival Japan 2021. It is now officially confirmed that Alice in Borderland season 2 will be coming to Netflix on Dec. 22, 2022.

What will Alice in Borderland season 2 be about?

Alice in Borderland season 2 is set to continue where the series left off, with the four protagonists journeying further to face newer, tougher, and likely even more vicious games than before. This is especially the case as Arisu and the gang will now be competing in ‘face card’ games that weren’t available before. Since the higher the card number equals the higher the difficulty level, we can expect some pretty gruesome, complex scenes.

The latest trailer shows us a much larger scale than in season 1, with bigger stakes, bigger threats, and even more action. Arisu and Usagi are clearly attempting to find out more about their murderous nightmare, as well as how to escape it: Arisu states, “I just want to know. What exactly is this crazy game?”. Usagi then theorises, “If we defeat all the card members, we might get back to our world.”

Whilst, of course, there is the manga source material to rely upon for theories, Netflix’s creative control of the show truly means the season could be unpredictable, even for loyal fans.
