Bold fans, when the spoilers mentioned that Carter was going to make a romantic gesture toward Katie full of love and support, I didn’t expect it to be him unexpectedly showing up at her follow-up for her heart tests. But that’s exactly what happened on Dec. 21’s episode of The Bold and the Beautiful.

Prior to the reveal of just who Katie’s doctor is, this random update on her heart health (and subsequent reminiscing about Stormy) felt wildly out of place in the story. Apparently, Katie skipped her annual spring appointment. She cited everything going on in her and her family’s lives, but that was a convenient plot excuse.

Katie’s physician is Dr. Grace Buckingham, this whole episode seemed like it ended up being a means of bringing Grace up to speed on Carter’s love life for reasons that have yet to be made clear. Here’s what happened.

The Bold and the Beautiful recap (Dec. 21)

Once again, Katie and Brooke discussed Bill. Understandably, Katie’s worried about him. He’s not in a good place, and she recognizes that, but she can only do so much. As she expressed to Brooke, life is too short to  be unhappy. The implication, of course, being that if she continues on this merry-go-round with Bill, she’ll never have the love she deserves.

Remember, he passionately pursued Brooke only to turn around and do the same with Katie after her sister firmly put her foot down and rejected him. Katie wants a man who is all in with her, and Bill hasn’t risen to the occasion. She’s never been enough for him.

Katie, however, is scared about her future. Alarmingly, she said that she’s living on borrowed time and that it’s Stormy’s sacrifice that extended her life. I’m note sure if that was fear over receiving bad news from her doctor, but Katie’s heart condition hasn’t been described in such precarious terms in quite awhile.

In a well placed flashback, Brooke urged her sister to seize life by the reins. Stormy had given Katie a new lease on hers by giving up his own. She could wallow in the tragedy of his choice or she could let it not have been done in vain. Echoing her words from the past, Brooke encouraged Katie to see a positive future for herself not one mired in what-ifs and brought down by worry. It was a beautiful moment between the sisters.

Brooke offered to go with Katie to her appointment, but she declined. She wanted to go on her own. But that choice was promptly thrown out the window when Carter learned where she was. He’d just come from Steffy informing him and Taylor about Sheila being alive. The conversation in the main office was an info dump for those who haven’t been keeping up with the soap.

For some reason Steffy thinks Carter could end up being a target at some point, the line threw me. Did it throw y’all? Anyway, after he finished there, he crossed the hall looking for Katie. Brooke let him know that she was at the doctor’s. Turns out, Katie hadn’t shared that with him. Oops.

Still, when Carter said someone should be there with her and followed that statement up with a decision to go to the hospital, Brooke was all for that idea. Presumably, the romance in the gesture was Carter showing up when Katie needed someone, but that could have gone left considering she hadn’t let him in on her fears about her health.

Katie, however, felt soothed by his presence even knowing that it could cause a dust-up with Grace. The two have never been on the right foot. Carter broke Zoe and Paris’ hearts over the same woman: Quinn. Grace has been holding onto a grudge because she loves her daughters and she doesn’t trust him. To be fair, she hasn’t been given reason to though, at this point, his love life is none of her business.

While she remained professional, Grace was holding onto a thread of cordiality. Carter is, after all, with yet another woman who he “only wants the best for and cares for immensely.” But, her patient’s needs come first so Grace started to give Katie the results of her tests. The episode ended before we could hear the news, but I doubt something is going to be wrong with Katie’s heart. There haven’t been any signs of declining health and this heart plot literally just popped up.

Until next time, Bold fans. Stay beautiful!
