Welcome, everyone, to 2023. I hope you had a great New Year and the year is excellent for each of you. Below, I share a quick list featuring five December movies to watch and three to skip, because, if we’re being honest, they’re not always worth it.

January is always known as a weaker month in the world of movies. It’s where studios dump off the big-budget movies they know won’t make much money or the overlap from movies that were limited release in December and opening wide after the first of the year. The list might not be super strong, but I am sure some great ones will come out.

New January movies to watch

Women Talking – Theaters – Jan. 6

I saw Women Talking at the 2022 AFI Film Festival and was simply blown away by Sarah Polley’s work. The movie is not an easy watch as it tells the story of women in a religious community that has to face either staying and fighting or leaving. It features some of the best work in front of and behind the camera you will see this year.

M3GAN – Theaters – Jan. 6

I have nothing to add to this other than it looks TERRIFYING and I am excited to see Chucky’s twin kill everyone.

A Man Called Otto – Theaters – Jan. 13

The film follows Otto, a grumpy old man who has given up on life following the death of his wife. However, when new neighbors arrive, Otto’s life is turned upside down. Look, when I tell you that this movie is good, trust me because it was one of the biggest surprises of 2022 for me. Tom Hanks is great, but Mariana Treviño steals the show.

Shotgun Wedding – Prime Video – Jan. 27

Jennifer Lopez is the queen of rom-com, and she showed that last year with the brilliant Marry Me. Now, she is back on Prime Video, starring alongside Josh Duhamel (who I love) in this story that starts as a wedding and ends with everyone in danger. I CAN’T WAIT.

Pamela, a love story – Netflix – Jan. 30

After hearing that Pam & Tommy was made without Pamela Anderson’s consent, I was heartbroken for her having to relive all that all over again. I love a good documentary, and Anderson’s story is unique and notable on many levels. I can’t wait to watch this and see that there is so much more to Pamela than meets the eye.

New January movies to skip

The Drop – Hulu – Jan. 13

While I can’t say a whole lot as the movie is under embargo, but it being here should tell you everything you need to know.

House Party – Theaters – Jan. 13

The movie has been removed, canceled, and moved to January, and now they are deciding to release it in theaters? All of that sounds like it is going to be bad. No thanks.

The Son – Theaters – Jan. 20

When it was announced that Florian Zeller would release the follow-up to the masterpiece that was The Father, I was excited. However, the movie was a massive disappointment. The script was lackluster, the performances were so bad they were laughable, and the overall film’s message is bad.

From our list of January movies to watch, which are you the most excited to see? Did we miss any?
