The 2022 season has been an interesting one for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Heading into their first season without franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who retired last season after 18 seasons with the team, it was clear this would be a transitional year for the team.
As the season began, Pittsburgh looked to Mitch Trubisky as its starter before putting in rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett, who had been drafted by the team in the first round of the NFL Draft. Since going in as started, Pickett has shown many glimpses of hope in helping to turn the team’s season around and put them in a place where the postseason has suddenly become a possibility.
With Week 18 finally having arrived, there is one simple question on the minds of fans: Can the Steelers still make it into the playoffs, and how?
Can Pittsburgh make the playoffs?
Heading into the final week of the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers can still make the playoffs and are one of three teams in the AFC that are still in the hunt. At the moment, the Steelers are vying for the No. 7 seed in the AFC playoff bracket as are the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.
What has to happen for the Steelers to make the playoffs in Week 18?
In order for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make the playoffs in Week 18, three things must happen:
- The Steelers must beat the Cleveland Browns.
- The Miami Dolphins must lose to the New York Jets
- The New England Patriots must lose to the Buffalo Bills.
Who needs to lose for the Steelers to make the playoffs?
In order for the Steelers to make it into the playoffs they’ll need the Browns, Patriots, and Dolphins to lose their games in Week 18.
How do the Steelers make the playoffs?
The Steelers’ path to the playoffs is simple. In order to make it into the postseason, Pittsburgh has to defeat the Browns at home. If they lose, their playoff dreams come to an end. In addition to picking up a win over the Browns, the team will also need a bit of help to make it into the postseason needing two additional AFC teams to lose in Week 18: The New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins.
If either the Patriots or Dolphins win, the Steelers will immediately be eliminated from the playoffs regardless of whether they get a win over the Browns. So Steelers fans will want to be watching the scoreboards of the Patriots and Dolphins games, which will play key roles in Pittsburgh’s postseason odds.
