It was first established in 1952 by the organization to recognize those who have made “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” according to the Golden Globes website. Honorees could be actors, directors, writers, and producers.
Where does the name come from? Cecil B. DeMille was a director, producer, and actor known as the founding father of American cinema. He directed and produced several successful films including The Ten Commandments (1923), The King of Kings (1927), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), and The Ten Commandments (1956).
Of course DeMille had to be the first recipient of the award, which he received in 1952. Over the years, Walt Disney, Judy Garland (the first woman to be recognized), Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Doris Day, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bridges, and many more have been honored.
