There’s a new adult animated comedy, and its characters are familiar to many of us! Though, some of the iconic Scooby-Doo figures in the new HBO Max series, Velma, look a bit different this time around. Have you checked out the show yet?
The spin-off (which definitely isn’t appropriate for kids!), has actress Mindy Kaling at the helm voicing the titular character, as well as serving as an executive producer. Joining the star in lending their voices are Sam Richardson as Shaggy Rogers, Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones Jr., Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, Russell Peters as Aman Dinkley, Sarayu Blue as Diya Dinkley, Melissa Fumero as Sophie, Jane Lynch as Donna Blake, and Wanda Sykes as Linda Ke.
Charlie Grandy serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Howard Klein and Sam Register taking on EP duties as well. The Warner Bros. Animation produced project premiered its 10-episode season with the first two installments on Jan. 12, 2023.
According to TVLine, two new episodes will continue to be released weekly until the finale on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023. If you’ve seen the show, or perhaps just the trailer at this point, you probably noticed that this iteration of Velma looks a bit different than the original character.
What ethnicity is Velma in the HBO Max animated series?
Since the beginning stages of the series, the behind the scenes crew knew they wanted to reimagine the look of the iconic character. In HBO Max’s Velma, the brains of the Scooby-Doo gang is South Asian. In May 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery presented their plan at the Upfronts. With Kaling taking to the stage, she said if a dog can solve crimes, then her Velma “can be brown,” Deadline reports.
Another shake up in the animated comedy is Shaggy’s ethnicity. In this version of the story, the Mystery Inc. member is Black. It’s so great to see different types of representation in the modern take on the story!
Velma is all about the titular character and her origin story. We’re going to see just how the group of the best spooky mystery solvers was formed. So this is the story before Mystery Inc. was officially established. How fun!
Velma releases new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
