The Scooby-Doo series and franchise films are productions many of us grew up with. The cartoon is one of the best and most popular of all time. The new iteration based on the children’s show, Velma, has a much more mature rating. Why is that the case?

The animated comedy is centered around none other than Velma Dinkley, the “unsung and under-appreciated brains” of the spooky mystery solvers, per the synopsis. This is her origin story and the life of the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang before the group was officially formed.

As of Jan. 12, 2023, the first two episodes are now streaming on HBO Max. Two new installments will be released each week until the finale on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023. There is a total of 10 episodes this season, TVLine shares.

Mindy Kaling voices the titular character, who is South Asian in this spin-off. The actress also executive porduces the series. Sam Richardson as Shaggy Rogers, Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones Jr., Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, Russell Peters as Aman Dinkley, Sarayu Blue as Diya Dinkley, Melissa Fumero as Sophie, Jane Lynch as Donna Blake, and Wanda Sykes as Linda Ke round out the cast.

So why can’t kids watch the comedy? Why is it rated TV-MA? We’ve got the answer for you below!

Why is Velma rated R? (TV-MA)

When a television program is rated TV-MA, that means it should be watched by a “Mature Audience Only.”  The series is meant for adults and more than likely unsuitable for those under the age of 17. Shows are rated TV-MA for various reasons including graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, or indecent language.

For Velma, the series has been marketed as an adult animated comedy. So their target audience is those 18 and older. According to HBO Max, the mature rating is also due to sexual situations and violence. If you’ve seen the trailer, there’s talk of murder, drinking, and drugs. So really, this is now surprise.

Velma releases new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
