The New Amsterdam series finale saw one medical director leave and another arrive. Who was the female medical director at the end?
We got a two-hour New Amsterdam series finale on Tuesday, Jan. 17. If you found it a little overwhelming, you’re not alone. The last episode didn’t seem to connect to all the storylines brought up in the previous couple of episodes. Just as Max and Elizabeth got together, Max made a huge decision to move to another country without her!
At the start of the final episode, Max announced that he was moving to Switzerland to be part of the World Health Organization. This was for Luna, who had clearly suffered with her dad constantly being called into the hospital. She even missed another mermaid parade because of a case, and said “I hate New Amsterdam” because of it.
Who was the new medical director in the New Amsterdam series finale?
With Max leaving, it meant the search for a new medical director was back on. We got to meet a woman who come up to the front desk in her running gear and made a bit of a fool of herself while she searched for her assistant. Then there were a few moments that reminded us of Max’s first entrance in the New Amsterdam pilot.
It looked like this woman was the replacement for Max. However, by the end, we found out that she was the new medical director decades later. The woman was Luna Goodwin, who was now a doctor and proud to stand where her father once did.
Did Max and Elizabeth stay together in New Amsterdam?
Throughout New Amsterdam Season 5, we found out that Helen wasn’t going to return. Max struggled to move on at first, but then he started to see Elizabeth Wilder in a different light. The two connected and Max even learned sign language for her.
Max and Elizabeth had a mutual attraction. By the end of the season, Max chose her. At one point in the penultimate episode, Elizabeth wondered if they were right for each other. Neither of them would do something unethical to save the other’s lives the way Helen did for Max with a cancer drug trial. Maybe that made them perfect for each other.
However, Max moving to Switzerland put their relationship up in the air. We didn’t find out at the very end whether they did stay together. Elizabeth clearly had some sort of impact on Luna, though. When she gave her first speech as the medical director, she had someone signing the speech behind her. Maybe we can believe that Max and Elizabeth found a way to make it work.
Doctors returning for the New Amsterdam series finale
Unfortunately, Helen didn’t return for the final episode. She was mentioned in the penultimate episode, though. It turned out that she set strict parameters for a drgu trial in an attempt to save Max’s life. It was unethical, and Max realized that she did that so early on because she loved him. That was before they got together!
There were a couple of faces we saw who haven’t been around for a while. Daniel Dae Kim returned as Dr. Cassian and we saw Christine Chang returned as Agnes. It was a huge surgery that, in the end, went successfully. This wasn’t about the case, though. It was all about the doctors and saying goodbye to each of them.
We ended with Lauren finding an apartment to buy—and that apartment was going to take a lot of work that Casey thought she was crazy about buying. Reynolds and Gabrielle were at dinner with Reynolds’ family, suggesting that they are staying together. Iggy and Martin got married in a private ceremony, suggesting that they found a way to make things work after their divorce.
