Looking to start the weekend off with a new film? Check out the A24 coming-of-age comedy-drama When You Finish Saving the World. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is finally making its debut in-theaters nationwide on Jan. 20. The film is written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg (Fleishman is in Trouble) in his feature directorial debut.
The film follows a high school student named Ziggy who performs original folk-rock songs for his online fan base. Ziggy’s mother, Evelyn, runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse and finds his hobby unsettling as she has a more formal and uptight look on life and career due to her own experiences. The film is based on a Audie Award-winning podcast drama also written by Eisenberg which is told from the perspective of three family members, at different stages of their lives.
The movie adaptation stars Julianne Moore as Evelyn Katz, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) as Ziggy Katz, Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why) as Lila, Jay O. Sanders (The Assistant) as Roger Katz, Billy Bryk (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as Kyle, and Eleonore Hendricks as Angie.
Wolfhard is known for his role on the hit Netflix original Stranger Things which has, undoubtedly, become a huge success among young teens as well as an adult demographic. This begs the question, can this be a film that both adults and kids can enjoy? Read on to find out the film’s rating and if you’re able to take young ones to watch.
When You Finish Saving the World age rating
The MPAA gave When You Finish Saving the World an R rating. There aren’t any explicit scenes of violence in the film so you won’t need to worry about that but there are mentions of domestic violence cases. There is also strong language throughout the film. You’ll also see a teenager vape marijuana. It’s a movie that definitely showcases the reality of adolescents in the age of the internet so expect to see some of that behavior dramatized on screen. If you’re kids are under the age of 17, feel free to go with them to see this movie.
