NCIS season 20 episode 12, “Big Rig,” found Nick looking into the disappearance of a fellow NCIS agent who was working undercover. After NCIS Agent Sawyer came to him looking disheveled with bloody clothes, Nick was worried about him. Let’s go over what happened in the episode.

Nick had been helping Agent Sawyer during an undercover op, giving him guidance when he needs it. But when he disappeared, Nick became worried. This was especially true after his car was found burnt to a crisp with a body inside.

To their relief, the dead man was not Sawyer but FBI Agent Greg Parlamis. They were working undercover to find out who was responsible for killing truckers bringing supplies to military bases. Things only got more complicated when it looked like Sawyer’s gun was used to kill Parlamis.

Eventually, Nick decided to go undercover to help Sawyer out. He learned a trucker named Wade, who was hired by the company being burglarized, had been imprisoned for those types of crimes in the past. Nick was able to figure out where the bar is that Sawyer had called his mom from and went undercover to find him.

It turns out that Sawyer did kill Parlamis, but apparently he was a dirty agent and had been stealing from Wade. Sawyer killed him in self defense but then had to tell Wade what happened to keep cover. Eventually, Nick got him to admit why he’s taking this case so hard.

Having figured out the truckers were stealing vitamins to extract a chemical that was used to create GHB, Sawyer admitted he lost his sister to a drug overdose and wanted to get the drugs off the streets. He just needed to get closer to Wade to find out who his boss is. They eventually discovered the big boss is Mama Jo Dalton, who owned the bar where Nick found Sawyer.

While the bad guys think they were able to kill Nick and Sawyer without anyone knowing–having discovered Nick was a cop due to someone seeing him at a crime scene–Nick was smarter. He had taken one of the guys’ phone and used it to text his team.

With the team saving the day, Sawyer and Nick were able to stop the bad guys. Now that the case is over, Nick assured Sawyer he’ll be there for him if he needs anything. He even came over during the team’s trivia night put together after McGee was unable to take part in a trivia game show.

McGee had been offered a spot to be part of the game show only for the show to halt production in the aftermath of a cheating scandal. While he may not be able to show his trivia knowledge off to the world, McGee enjoyed a night with his teammates as they had fun, Sawyer included.

This was a great episode that allowed us to see how Nick’s own recovery was going. He had to go back undercover despite the team’s worries, but he at least knows this time they are there for him. Plus, he was able to turn around and be there for Sawyer when he needed it.
