The Pro Bowl is an annual all-star game in the NFL that showcases the best players from around the league with players selected through a combination of fan voting, player voting, and coaching selection.

The game is typically held at the end of the NFL season, just before the Super Bowl, giving fans the opportunity to see their favorite players compete in a fun and relaxed setting. The game features top-notch talent, including some of the best quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and defenders in the NFL.

It’s intended to be a game filled with NFL stars, which is perhaps why many watching the game today have found themselves wondering how backup quarterback Tyler Huntley managed to make it onto the starting roster for the AFC. This isn’t to discredit Huntley’s abilities, it’s just quite unusual for a backup to be playing over a starting quarterback in an all-star game.

Why is Tyler Huntley in the Pro Bowl?

If you’re a bit puzzled by Tyler Huntley’s presence at the Pro Bowl, you’re not alone. Many have been confused by how Huntley managed to secure a place on the AFC roster over other starting quarterbacks across the league. So why is Huntley playing in the Pro Bowl?

Huntley was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster as an alternate after the three originally selected quarterbacks and the original alternates were all unavailable to play in the game. This led the NFL to go deeper into the depth charts which is how Huntley was added to the team as a starting AFC quarterback alongside Derek Carr from the Raiders and Trevor Lawrence from the Jaguars.

Who did Tyler Huntley replace at the Pro Bowl?

So who exactly did Tyler Huntley replace in order to land a spot at the Pro Bowl? Originally, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen were selected for the AFC quarterback positions. With Mahomes heading to the Super Bowl and Burrow and Allen sitting the Pro Bowl out due to injury, the NFL next looked to its alternates for the game to fill the spots.

Unfortunately, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Lamar Jackson were all unavailable to play due to their own lingering injuries which is when the NFL turned to the next alternates on the list including Huntley.
