Updated: Oct. 6, 2023 – Surprisingly, we’re still dealing with TV cancellations for scripted series from the 2022-2023 television season even though we’re in an entirely new broadcast year. The delay has been due to the writers strike that kicked off in May 1, 2023 and lasted for 148 days before the WGA and the AMPTP reached an tentative agreement bringing the strike to an end on Sept. 27.

While the actors strike, which began on July 14, is still ongoing, we expect decisions on the last shows to be left in limbo to be made in the coming weeks. Since the start of renewal and cancellation season, Hidden Remote has been keeping track of what’s returning for the 2023-2024 television year and what’s been axed by ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, and NBC.

In the following coverage, you’ll see which scripted dramas and comedies as well as unscripted programming like game shows, reality series, and talks shows have been renewed and which have been canceled.

This list also includes series that were renewed for multiple seasons prior to 2023 and are expected to continue into the 2023-2024 season. Now, without further ado, here’s the renewal scorecard for the Big 5 networks along with which shows are still on the bubble.

TV cancellations and renewals in 2023

ABC shows renewed in 2023

ABC still has one series it needs to make a decision on. The rest of their roster, however, has been determined. The network also added 9-1-1 to its line-up after the hit series was canceled by FOX. The procedural drama’s spin off, 9-1-1: Lone Star is staying put on FOX for its fifth season.

ABC shows canceled in 2023

The Goldebergs was canceled, making its tenth season its last. Also canceled: Alaska Daily, Big Sky, and The Company You Keep. While there hasn’t been official confirmation that the game show The Final Straw won’t be moving forward with a season 2, TVLine reports that the series has been axed.

Unfortunately for fans of The Wonder Years reboot, the move to being a part of ABC’s summer line-up didn’t work out for the series. It was canceled after it finished its second season run and won’t be returning for a third.

A decision has finally been made concerning Home Economics’ fourth season. The comedy series closed out the 2022-2023 television season without a renewal or cancellation announcement. The network initially put off making a decision until after the strikes end, however, that’s no longer the case. With the writers strike finished, ABC has canceled the show instead of holding out for the actors strike to end. This leaves only The Rookie: Feds without a renewal or cancellation.

As previously reported by Hidden Remote, the show’s cast was under option until October but, because of the work stoppage, the network could hold out until December to make a decision on The Rookie: Feds. They aren’t likely to do this considering finalizing what the midseason schedule will look like and what shows may be held until the 2024-2025 season is imperative.

Fire Country
FIRE COUNTRY stars Max Thieriot (SEAL TEAM) as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining an unconventional prison release firefighting program in Northern California, where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region. It’s a high-risk, high-reward assignment, and the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural hometown, where he was once a golden all-American son until his troubles began. Inspired by series star Max Thieriot’s experiences growing up in Northern California fire country. FIRE COUNTRY airs this fall on Fridays (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. In dramatic fashion, CBS concluded its 2022-2023 renewal and cancellation season by first cancelling S.W.A.T. in an unexpected move that blindsided the show’s lead Shemar Moore. However, after fan backlash and Moore taking to social media to voice his displeasure, CBS reversed its decision and renewed the series for a seventh season which will be its final one.

The network renewed the majority of its programming but, unfortunately, for some fans of its scripted titles, three didn’t make the cut and won’t be returning for the 2023-2024 television season.

CBS shows canceled in 2023

  • NCIS: Los Angeles was in the middle of its fourteenth season when it was announced that season 14 will be the show’s last.
  • East New York and True Lies will not be continuing on with second seasons.

The CW’s trajectory continues to shift as the network, now majority owned by Nexstar, attempts to broaden its audience. As such, longtime viewers will see notable absences in the fall schedule which has been outfitted with acquired television series. Four U.S. scripted originals have been renewed along with a renewal for one of their latest acquisitions which has yet to air.

Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which Hidden Remote had previously listed as potentially being canceled, will have a run of new episodes. They’ll premiere in 2024. According to Heather Oleander, the Head of Unscripted at The CW, “after that that we don’t know [what] the future is. There was some discussion around whether the cast wanted to continue with the show or not.” So the series could be seeing its final run come next year.

  • All American renewed for season 6
  • Walker renewed for season 4
  • Penn & Teller renewed for season 10
  • World’s Funniest Animals renewed for season 4
  • Sullivan’s Crossing renewed for season 2 ahead of its U.S. debut on the network in the fall.

  • Superman & Lois renewed for season 4 (shortened season – 10 episodes)
  • All American: Homecoming renewed for season 3

CW shows canceled in 2023

  • Walker Independence won’t be moving forward at The CW for a second season. The team behind the show weren’t successful in finding the series another home.
  • The Winchesters has been canceled. The search for a new home has concluded, the show won’t be moving forward with a second season.
  • Gotham Knights won’t have a season 2. The show was shopped but didn’t find a new home.

CW shows on the bubble in 2023

The only series left with an undecided fate is Criss Angel’s Magic with the Stars. The unscripted program debuted in 2022. If renewed, it’ll be the sole new series that the network premiered in the 2022-2023 to receive another season.

FOX shows renewed in 2023

We’re currently awaiting news for two of FOX series. The majority of their line-up has been renewed including unscripted programming such as talk shows. Their animated block is also moving forward with multiple season renewals.

FOX shows canceled in 2023

At the end of 2022, the new fall series Monarch was canceled and won’t be back for 2023-2024 television season. As mentioned previously in this article, 9-1-1 has been canceled by FOX but has been picked up for season 7 by ABC. The Resident, Call Me Kat, Fantasy Island, and Welcome to Flatch will also won’t be moving forward on the network.

HouseBroken is the last remaining FOX series from the 2022-2023 television season to be left in limbo. With the writers strike over, and negotiations ongoing with SAG-AFTRA to bring an end to the actors strike, we should be hearing soon about the show’s fate.

NBC shows renewed in 2023

Quantum Leap, the reboot/revival, has been a win for the network and got an early renewal in Dec. 2022. Night Court and La Brea also received early renewals. TVLine reports La Brea‘s third season has an initial order of six episodes with the possibility of an additional order down the road.

In a surprising turn, Magnum P.I. has been canceled. Season 5 Part 2 will go on as schedule, so fans can anticipate the last ten episodes of the series to begin their run on Wednesday, Oct. 4, but the network won’t be moving forward with a season 6.
