Angela Bassett has had an incredible career spanning movies and television, making her one of the most well known names in the industry. Most recently, aside from her role as Athena Grant on the FOX series 9-1-1, Bassett was seen in the sequel to Black Panther, earning her nominations in major awards shows since. With plenty of nominations to her name, has she ever won an Oscar?
Bassett, who has starred in films such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back, What’s Love Got To Do With It, and Akeelah and the Bee, has earned multiple award nominations through the years for her acting.
In fact, at the 2023 Golden Globes Awards, she won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It was the second time she won a Golden Globe. She won her first in 1993 for her role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It.
Bassett is also currently nominated for the same category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is set for Feb. 26, 2023. With all of the nominations she has rightly received, has she ever obtained an Oscar?
Has Angela Bassett ever won an Oscar or been nominated?
When it comes to the Oscars, she has been nominated twice. The first time was for What’s Love Got To Do With It and this year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
While she has not won an Oscar yet, with how well her performance in the Black Panther sequel was received, also winning Best Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice Awards, we’d be surprised if she didn’t win! In fact, she made history as the first Oscar nominee to come from any of the Marvel Studios films. Before this, none of their films garnered any nominations in any of the four major categories besides what would be considered “technical categories.”
Bassett joins other well deserving Best Supporting Actress nominees this year including Hong Chau for The Whale, Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Stephanie Hsu also for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The 95th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 12 on ABC.
