NCIS season 20, episode 15, “Unusual Suspects,” introduced us to Alden’s father, Ramon Parker, and it was a delightful treat. He was not what we expected at all, but to see more father-son dynamics at play is always an interesting affair on NCIS. Plus, the team were busy figuring out a ride-share accident that killed a sailor.

Their deceased victim, Petty Officer Sam Vega, had recently returned from leave when he was killed in the accident. It appeared he was actually the victim of a homicide but they needed to figure out who killed him. They soon learned that Sam may have been cheating on his girlfriend, but eventually that turned out not to be the case.

Sam had been part of an app called “Grand Bubby,” which matched retirement home residents with young people to keep them company. At first, it looked like he had used his online gambling habits to scam them out of money. But soon enough, evidence indicated he was actually using his gambling winnings to fund for renovations at one such facility, Sunshine Pines.

Alden’s father helped the team, at least he sort of did. While Parker had brushed Sunshine Pines off as a place for his dad to live, it appeared nicer than he thought. Since everyone would recognize the other agents, Tim took Ronan to do some undercover work. While Roman played cards with some residents, Tim went with one of the staff members to discuss the facility.

Eventually, it looked like the man in question used his ID badge to get the Propofol that was used to kill Sam. But then it appeared someone may have used his ID without his knowledge. When Nick and Jessica returned to speak with Marilyn, the woman he was recently assisting, they found she had gone along with a painting Nick had helped put up.

They soon realized that Marilyn was actually involved and hiding the fact she was selling off her late husband’s stolen artwork. He had stolen the art but died before he could sell it off. Marilyn had gotten her new beau to help her and when Sam, who was an art major, began to notice the painting’s worth, she got her partner to help dispose of Sam.

This was a much slower-paced NCIS episode and definitely had some twists. At first, it did seem like Sam was into some shady business. But in reality, he was just someone who got caught up in a situation that he truly did not see coming.

Alden’s father seemed like he will take to Sunshine Pines well, as long as he doesn’t do anything to get kicked out this time. We’ll have to wait two weeks for another episode, but we’re looking forward to seeing what else the team is up to.
