Alaska Daily finally returned with a new episode on March 2. Episode 7, “Enemy of the People,” dealt with a hostage situation where the Concerned Citizen held Eileen captive. Her team worked diligently to help free her while she got to the bottom of her captor’s issue.

He told her that he despised the kind of reporting she did. His intent was to force Eileen to confess that her work is a fabrication of lies and that she suppresses the truth so that corporations can destroy what he believes to be the “backbone of the country.”

Clearly, the two don’t share the same ideologies, but Eileen wanted to get to the root of the Concerned Citizen’s problem beyond the talking points he read and agreed with from the news sources he tuned into. But, considering the stakes of his actions, they were on a shortening time clock that could result in his death since he was wielding a gun.

Did he make it out of alive? Here’s what we know!

Does the Concerned Citizen die in Alaska Daily?

Yes, according to Cheat Sheet, Eric–who’s identified as the Concerned Citizen–does die in the episode. He was holding Eileen captive, but the two were coming to some kind of understanding as Eric gave his backstory to the reporter. He’d been a worker on an oil rig, but he’s been out of a job for years due to environmental activists destabilizing the industry in the name of saving the planet through their protests. His house had recently been foreclosed on.

The police told the reporters of the Daily Alaskan that they could make a kill shot and end this hostage situation, all they needed was a message to be relayed to Eileen so she’d know what was about to transpire. She, however, didn’t want to witness Eric’s death especially when she was getting through to him by listening to his hardships.

After a standoff that lasted hours, Eric was killed after he made Eileen promise that she’d tell his story. He stood in sight of the snipers, held a gun up to her, and they took the shot. There had been an attempt made to end things without Eric losing his life. His daughter, who he’d written a goodby note to and who was in rehab, had been contacted so that she might be able to reach out to her father and deescalate the situation, but her call came too late.

Like Eric requested, Eileen did write about him and her time as his captive.
