Not only did The Last of Us season 1 finale, “Look for the Light” answer what happened to Ellie’s mom, Anna, the episode also depicted it in an opening sequence that showcased the tragedy of her circumstances.

Anna had been running through the woods, clearly trying to escape from something chasing her. She came across a house and hurried into its structure hoping for some means of staying safe. The problem, of course, wasn’t simply that she was heavily pregnant. She was also on the verge of giving birth.

Panicked, in pain, and only equipped with a folding knife pocket knife, she had to square off with a crazed Infected whilst in labor in a room upstairs. She managed to kill the fungus controlled being and then realized she’d birthed her child in the middle of fighting for their lives.

As she held her daughter, we learned that’s Ellie as an infant and her mom had been bitten. Distraught but determined to see the joy in her baby while she still could, Anna held on to her sanity long enough to be able to pass Ellie along to Marlene for safe keeping once the Fireflies found her in the abandoned house.

Marlene had been hesitant to take the baby because she could be infected, but Anna lied and said she’d cut the umbilical cord before she’d been bitten. Though she appeared skeptical, Marlene did as she was asked and took Ellie into her charge though she had one last request to fulfill first.

Anna and Marlene had known each other all their lives. As such, Anna asked her to kill her. Initially, Marlene refused. That’s a lot to ask of someone who cares for you but, after passing Ellie to her companion standing in the hallway, she did as Anna requested so that her friend wouldn’t have to bear the additional tragedy of turning into a monster.
