The Last of Us season 2 plot

While we don’t have an official synopsis for the show’s second season, we do know that it’ll be based on The Last of Us Part II.

The game takes place five years after the events of the massacre Joel committed in order to save Ellie from being sacrificed for the greater good without her consent. In that time, the two have settled in the community led by Maria in Jackson, Wyoming. It is there the two have found peace and stability despite the Infected world they live in and desperate people who will do anything to survive.

Their peace, however, is disrupted by a violent event that becomes the catalyst for Ellie to seek justice and closure in a relentless journey to hunt down those responsible for what happened. As is typical with this series, the choices she makes will cause devastating repercussions both physically and emotionally.

The HBO adaptation tends to stick closely to what happened in the games while still expanding and fleshing out the story, so it’s likely season 2 will incorporate the majority of the above plot.

Will The Last of Us end with season 2?

It depends on whether show creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin believe they can tell the totality of The Last of Us Part II‘s story in one season. In an interview with Collider, Mazin said the following about the next part of Ellie and Joel’s story:

"And then, the story that remains, that continues forth in the work that Naughty Dog’s done on the second game, is a lot. Probably the amount of remaining story would take us more than a season to tell. But definitely, I don’t see this as something that runs on and on and on. We don’t have that ambition. Our ambition is to tell the story that exists, as best as we can, in a different medium."

So we may be in for a third season if it’s warranted and HBO greenlights the series for more episodes. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more The Last of Us news and coverage!
