Last week saw the return of the HBO original series Perry Mason after a near three year hiatus. The show picked up right where it left off after season 1 in the months following the Dodson trial. Through the episode we learn that Emily Dodson committed suicide shortly after the trail as she ultimately couldn’t take the loss of her son. Understandably, Mason isn’t taking it well and wakes up to nightmares of her drowning. He’s still lost, searching for what justice is.

With a new season comes a new story for Mason, played by Matthew Rhys. He’s shifted his business from practicing criminal law to civil. Episode one focuses on Mason representing a grocery store owner who is suing a former employee for stealing his intellectual property and copying his ideas to start his own shop. Mason begrudgingly wins the case as it puts the defendant out of business as he only has $500 to his name. The big guy beats the little guy, squashes him. It’s not the type of justice Mason had in mind.

In what’s sure to become the main storyline, a wealthy oil family, the McCutcheon’s, are involved in some shady business. The episode opens on a boat full of wealthy patrons being sabotaged and ultimately set ablaze. It’s later revealed the ambitious but careless son Brooks, set it up. He also has dreams of bringing an MLB team to Los Angeles to which his father, Lynell, is starkly against. At the closing of the episode Brooks is mysteriously shot dead in his car after a fruitless meeting about his MLB team.

My guess is it won’t be long before the paths of both Mason and the McCutcheon’s cross.

When will Perry Mason season 2 episode 2 air on HBO?

Perry Mason episode 2 “Chapter 10” will air tonight, March 13, on HBO at 9 p.m. ET. You can catch up with Mason and watch episode 1 now on HBO Max.

I’m hoping this season we get to see more of Mason developing his skills in the courtroom. The civil cases might not be as exciting as the complex murder trial of a child like in season 1, but it gives him the opportunity to learn the law and work through what justice is and what kind of lawyer he wants to be. The inevitable McCutcheon case and investigation should be the next test for Mason and his team.
