Sylvester Stallone was noticeably absent from Creed III which released in theaters Friday, March 3. For those who have been keeping up with the behind the scenes conflict surrounding the rights to the Rocky Balboa franchise, this should have came as no surprise.

The legendary actor and Irwin Winkler, a producer of the movies and rights holder to the film series, have been in a rather public and tense dispute over ownership. Stallone is credited as a producer on the third Creed movie but not as an executive producer which would have provided him with the ability to help steer the story being told.

Speaking on his absence from the film, Stallone told The Hollywood Reporter the following:

"That’s a regretful situation because I know what it could have been. It was taken in a direction that is quite different than I would’ve taken it. It’s a different philosophy — Irwin Winkler’s and Michael B. Jordan’s. I wish them well, but I’m much more of a sentimentalist. I like my heroes getting beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space. I just feel people have enough darkness."

Given the actor’s ongoing battle for rights over the franchise he wrote, can we expect him to return in Creed 4–stylized as Creed IV–as Rocky Balboa? Here’s what we know.

Will Sylvester Stallone be in Creed 4?

As Hidden Remote previously reported, Stallone did state that he’d be willing to appear in a fourth Creed movie if he and star Michael B. Jordan can come up with a story and Winkler isn’t a part of the project. As for Jordan, he told Sports Illustrated:

"I think there’s always space for Sly, for Rocky, to come back. That’s one of those amazing things about that character. It would make sense in any story line because it all stems from the world of Rocky. So any version of that, it would make sense."

So, while it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Stallone reprises the role of Rocky Balboa in a future Creed title, considering all that’s happening behind the scenes, it’s not likely to happen with the fourth film.
