Where was Boston Strangler filmed: Is it really in Boston?

When movies or shows need to choose a filming location, there’s a lot of factors that go into picking the right one. Or the one that is available for the length of time needed. With the new Hulu film Boston Strangler taking place in the city, some of you may be wondering if the production actually had the cameras rolling in Massachusetts.

The historical crime drama is directed by Matt Ruskin, with Keira Knightley, Carrie Coon, David Dastmalchian, and more starring in the movie about two reporters who cover the stories of the Boston Strangler’s victims as the murders are happening.

Sometimes most filming works in studio, while other times you need a specific location to make it look and feel right. What was the case for the Hulu production? We’ve got the answer for you below!

Where was Boston Strangler filmed?

It’s always cool when a production based on a true story actually films where the real events took place. And that’s the case for the Hulu movie! Boston Strangler was actually completely filmed in Massachusetts, with a focus in Greater Boston, per The Cinemaholic. The movie filmed from December 2021 until March 2022, with the cast and crew having to take part in the COVID-19 safety procedures since production was happening during the pandemic.

“To stay authentic,” the crew chose the metropolitan region of Greater Boston, where the real-life terrors happened, The Cinemaholic reports. Some of the spots in the area included exterior shots of homes used for the movie, as well as cameras set up around Pleasant Cafe and Medfield State Hospital. The outside of Winn Brook School in Belmont, Massachusetts was changed for the set to create the Cambridge Police station used in the film. And of course, everything had to be transformed to look like it was in the ’60s.

Boston Strangler is now streaming on Hulu.
