Shows (and a movie) like School Spirits to stream

1. Darby and the Dead (Hulu)

This 2022 supernatural teen comedy film follows its lead Darby Harper in her quest to help recently deceased popular girl, Capri Donahue, pass on. She’s doing so reluctantly as Capri has threatened to haunt her if she doesn’t find a way to get what would have been Capri’s Sweet 17 party back on track. To assist this mission, Capri coaches Darby and gives her a makeover, so she can infiltrate her former friend group. Along the way, Darby learns some valuable lessons about herself, grief, friendship, and moving on.

2. Nancy Drew (HBO Max and The CW App)

The beloved character who entered the book world in the ’30s got an update in 2019 when The CW adapted Nancy’s story for a new generation.

Set in the sleepy, seaside town of Horsehoe Bay, this paranormal series takes this iconic character and turns her into a grieving 19 year old whose love of sleuthing is rekindled when a town mystery starts to involve the people in her life including her new boyfriend, Ned “Nick” Nickerson.

Season 1 revolves around the fate of Lucy Sable, a teen girl whose story became town folklore when her ghost began to haunt Horsehoe Bay. There is, however, more to what happened to her and it’s up to Nancy along with Nick, George, Bess, and Ace to find out how Lucy’s tragedy matches up with the strange goings on that’s upending the peace in their world.

All three seasons that have aired are available to stream on HBO Max. The fourth and final season of Nancy Drew premieres Wednesday, May 31 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. The latest episodes will be available to stream on the CW App until the season makes its streaming debut sometime in the fall of 2023.

3. The Watchful Eye (Airs on Freeform; streams next day on Hulu)

Freeform’s latest series to hook audiences is The Watchful Eye, a mystery thriller that sees its lead Elena Santos posing as an experienced nanny to uncover a treasure within the landmark apartment building the Greybourne.

She, and her boyfriend Scott, are looking for a payday, but she ends up stumbling into a situation that may be more than she can handle. After all more than one person has met their untimely end on the premises and the families who live in the building, well, let’s just say the secrets they’re holding are the kind to kill over.

4. Boo, Bitch (Netflix)

Gia and Erika are high school seniors who barely get any recognition in school. Determined to change that, they both decide to make an effort to be seen by their peers. Unfortunately, for Erika, she wakes up to find that that the epic life she had all planned out is not going to happen, she’s died and become a ghost. Or at least, it’s not going to happen the way she thought it would since, despite her new undead status, Erika can very much be seen in the afterlife. Of course, she uses this to her advantage and begins to cultivate the popularity she always wanted in this comedy series.

5. Lockwood and Co. (Netflix)

This detective thriller takes place in an alternate version of Britain where ghosts have been rising from their graves. The phenomenon has cost the living as the ghosts are deadly to the touch. They’re also not detectable by adults but minors can see them hence the recruitment of teens to licensed ghost-hunting agencies to rid the region of these paranormal pests.

Lucy Carlyle has run away from home in the hope that she can land at an agency in London. She’s a psychic. Here abilities, however, don’t end up helping her cause. In a last ditch effort, she applies to an agency run by two boys–Lockwood & Co.
