Joker, the prestige DC film whose dramatic turn changed some people’s perception of the kind of movies the studio would put out, has been greenlit for a follow-up. The sequel, titled Joker: Folie À Deux, will be a musical with Joaquin Phoenix reprising the eponymous role and Lady Gaga introducing her version of Dr. Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn.

If you’ve been keeping up with DCEU news, you know that James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to build a connected universe that stretches across TV and film just like Marvel. However, fans of this particular world don’t have to worry about any asides, additions, or shoe horned in ties to the DCEU. It’ll continue to occupy its own space within the comics franchise.

It’ll be some time before Joker 2 makes its premiere. The movie isn’t set to release in theaters until Oct. 4, 2024.

According to Collider, production on the film began in Dec. 2022 and could run until Spring 2023.

Joker: Folie À Deux plot

Not much is known about Joker 2’s plot, however, its reportedly going to be set at Arkham Asylum. Considering Dr. Quinzel’s presence, the film will likely follow the beginnings of Joker and Harley’s romance. With a subtitle like Folie À Deux–A French phrase meaning madness shared by two–the movie could focus on the madness of love and the literal mental instability that both Arthur and Harleen share.
