Major spoilers ahead of John Wick: Chapter 4

The film John Wick: Chapter 4 was a box office smash over the weekend, and the Wick-verse will only expand in the near future.

Director Chad Stahelski will be stepping away from behind the camera and allowing the man behind the Underworld franchise to take over a film titled Ballerina. Len Wiseman has a history of directing strong female action heroines, including Kate Beckinsale’s Selene. The question remains how Wiseman will stay true to the John Wick franchise.

Now, let’s look at how the fourth chapter of the John Wick franchise sets up the highly anticipated upcoming film.

What’s the premise of Ballerina?

The official premise from the studio Lionsgate for Ballerina is as follows:

"Taking place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, ballerina-assassin Rooney hunts the murderers of her family."

Who is the actress who plays the Ballerina?

2023 Academy Award nominee for Best Actress, Ana de Armas, takes over the role of the Ballerina, who goes by the name Rooney. We originally saw the character in John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. However, the Blonde actress didn’t itinitially play the role. That distinction goes to real-life dancer and I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ Unity Phelan. Her character was a Ballerina dancer being watched over by The Director (played by Anjelica Huston).

In an interview with Collider last December, Keane Reeves said the upcoming film Ballerina is supposed to take place between John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4.  Then this past month, Lionsgate announced plans for the film to release in the spring or summer of 2024.

How Does John Wick: Chapter 4 set up Ballerina?

The movie John Wick: Chapter 4 sets up the Ballerina, but very briefly. When we see Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis Vincent de Gramont watches a dancer off in the distance. Now, this sounds vague, but considering the above premise. You could consider this foreshadowing for more screen time for the Gramont character.

And yes, Keanu Reeves is set to make his return to the Wick-verse in the Ballerina, even though his character seems to meet his fate in chapter four.
