We were back with another new, live episode of American Idol tonight! The competition continues to keep us on our toes with the results, based on our votes at home. But not just that, the show just continues to take us by surprise. While we thought we were going to say goodbye to three contestants tonight, the judges were able to save one more. That means we have the Top 8!

In “Judge’s Song Contest,” each judge picked a song they thought would be a good fit for each contestant. Then, it was up to the Idol hopefuls to choose one, not knowing which judge suggested which tune. In this evening’s episode, there was some friendly competition between those on the panel to see how many of the competitors picked their choices. And it’s none other than Katy Perry who came out the victor! And because of her win, she got to choose who to save from elimination and give us the Top 8 instead of the Top 7 we were expecting.

The evening’s episode featured a surprise performance from American Idol season 19 winner Chayce Beckham, as well as the Top 10 all vying for a spot in the Top 8 of course. That also means we said goodbye to two fan-favorites.

Who is continuing on to the next round? Who had to go home? Who did the judges save on American Idol? Check out the full list (and photo!) below!

Who is (temporarily) replacing Katy Perry and Lionel Richie on American Idol?

Next week features some very exciting guest judges since our current judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry won’t be there to offer their words of wisdom. That’s because the two will be busy at King Charles III’s coronation ceremony! So who’s taking their place? That would be Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran! Morissette will also be serving as a mentor, while Sheeran serenades us on stage too. It’s definitely an episode you don’t want to miss!

A new episode of American Idol airs next Sunday, May 7, 2023, on ABC.
