Why The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is not new tonight and won’t be for awhile
By Sabrina Reed
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is a staple of late night television on CBS. However, with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike underway much of TV is going to be heavily impacted. If you’re just hearing about this strike, you should know that it’s centered on the WGA’s dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) who represent the Hollywood studios, streamers, networks, and motion picture and TV producers who make and distribute the content we watch.
The issue is fair compensation and the potential impact of AI. Writers have been signalling for quite sometime that pay is not keeping pace with industry changes. Companies continue to profit and spending on content has continued to grow but, according to the WGA, “The companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writer pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels.”
You add the possibility of AI-generated scripts putting creatives out of work and cribbing from the existing work of other writers, and you can see why the WGA wants to protective Hollywood’s writing industry and the future of this specific area of the business. When the WGA and AMPTP couldn’t reach an agreement before the deadline on May 1, the strike went into effect.
Is The Late Show with Stephen Colbert new tonight?
If you’re wondering what this has to do with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, here’s what we know. Deadline reports late night television is going to go dark in solidarity with the strike. This means there will not be a new episode of Colbert’s show tonight on CBS. The network will likely air a rerun of the show in the timeslot.
Will there be a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tomorrow?
New episodes have been suspended indefinitely which means there could be weeks before a new episode hits airwaves if the strike goes on for that long. There’s also the possibility that the show resumes new episodes even as the strike continues considering its specific to writers and not the rest of the industry and it will have an impact on the livelihoods of creators in other disciplines and mediums as well. We’ll keep you posted as news comes in.
