The Diplomat season 2 release updates, cast, plot and more

Updated: June 20, 2023 – The Diplomat, starring Keri Russell in the titular role, is a political thriller on Netflix that has commanded attention since its premiere on April 20. The series follows Kate Wyler, the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom who’d rather be in Kabul, but who has been pushed into this position by the president.

As she learns part way through the season, this appointment is meant to be a litmus test as Kate has been shortlisted for the vice presidency. But, before a decision can be made, she must do her job and do it well in the U.K. and that means keeping the British Prime Minister from dragging the rest of the world into a war in retribution over an unprovoked attack on British forces.

Things, however, aren’t what they seem and there’s a conspiracy afoot that Kate begins to become privy of the more difficult it becomes to discern what foreign power attacked America’s ally. And that’s only what’s going on in Kate’s professional life. Personally, she’s trying to get divorced from her husband, Hal, with little success due to her circumstances and she’s developed an attraction to the British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison which works well for their partnership but could be ill-advised.

The Diplomat has a brilliant and hilarious eight episode freshman run. Fans are clamoring for a season 2. Here’s everything we know!

Has The Diplotmat been renewed for a season 2?

Yes! The Netflix original series was renewed just 10 days after it made its debut on the streamer.

Does The Diplomat season 2 have a release date?

No. However, it’ll likely premiere in 2024.

Is The Diplomat season 2 filming?

Yes! What’s on Netflix reports that production began in June 2023.

Where is The Diplomat season 2 filming?

Once more production is taking place in London. An eagle eyed Twitter user spotted two of the show’s actors outside of St. Paul’s Cathedral. You can see the image, here. Warning, it does contain spoilers.

How many episodes are in The Diplomat season 2?

According to What’s on Netflix, season 2 will have an episode count of six. That’s less than season 1 which was eight episodes.

The Diplomat season 2 cast

The majority of the cast isn’t likely to be changed. As such the following actors are expected to return for a second season:

Up in the air are Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Ato Essandoh as Stuart, and Jess Chanliau as Ronnie. Their characters were in proximity of the car bomb blast that went off in the season 1 finale.

The Diplomat season 1 ending

As mentioned above, the first season ended on a cliffhanger that saw Hal, Stuart, and Ronnie in the path of a car bomb blast. They’d been trying to speak with Merrit Grove before the attack happened and each were make their way toward him. Kate received the news of what happened just as she’d figured out that the British Prime Minister was responsible for the attack on the nation’s troops and not a foreign power like he’d led everyone to believe.

The Diplomat season 2 plot

While plot details haven’t been released yet we can presume the season will pick up in the aftermath of Kate learning about the car bomb. She’d just been explaining to Dennison what she’d deduced. Now she’ll have to contend with that attack, the leader of a world power nearly throwing the globe into conflict in order to stop the United Kingdom from losing Scotland, and her place on the President’s shortlist for a new Vice President.
