Is Yellowstone ending after season 5?

The topic of the second half of Yellowstone season 5 has been as dramatic as the show itself. Before we dive into the explanation, we do want to confirm that yes, Yellowstone season 5 is the final season. Part 2 was supposed to return in summer 2023 then in November, but has now been delayed to November 2024, per The Hollywood Reporter. That’s when the final six episodes are set to premiere.

The writers strike and the actors strike have further delayed production, and filming hasn’t started on the final episodes yet. Also, it seems like Kevin Costner will not be returning for the majority of the remaining episodes.

Alright, let’s break it all down for you. Back in February, mixed reports came out from two different entertainment news outlets – Deadline and Entertainment Weekly. Deadline reported there was a high possibility the Yellowstone chapter could be closing following season 5 due to scheduling conflicts with series lead, Costner. The actor had reportedly been asking for less shooting time, including on the back half of season 5.

He allegedly asked Paramount Network to cut shooting time down to one week for the episodes, which the company rejected, Deadline shares. Due to the scheduling conflicts, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and the rest of the cast were reportedly frustrated with the situation. Costner’s attorney, Marty Singer, responded and said the actor asking to shoot season 5 for only one week is “an absolute lie,” per TVLine. The news outlet reached out to Paramount and the company said they have “no news to report.”

On the other hand, Entertainment Weekly reported that it’s unknown if Costner will continue on the drama because of this, but reported the opposite of Deadline when it came to the show’s conclusion. According to EW, there were no plans to end the series. But now we know Deadline had the initial news correct. Though for a few months, no one knew what was going on!

Deadline also shares that Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is likely to star in another of the Western world’s spin-offs, which could see some of the Yellowstone cast members joining. The untitled series has received a straight-to-series order and is expected to premiere on the Paramount Network in December 2023.
