Bob’s Burgers: Mother Author Laser Pointer is new for Linda
Another holiday, another episode of Bob’s Burgers to get excited about. Even though the Belchers haven’t always celebrated Mother’s Day, it does happen.
Of course, if Linda Belcher was your mother, that’s something to be excited about. Even so, the matriarch of the Belcher family isn’t without her flaws. She does tend to have some wild and convoluted plans that don’t always tend to work.
Linda had had a few moments within season 13, but it makes sense that we’d see her shine in “Mother Author Laser Pointer.” I mean look at the title of the episode, there’s really nothing else you could expect from that title.
If you haven’t watched the Bob’s Burgers episode, “Mother Author Laser Pointer,” there will be spoilers from this point on. This is your spoiler warning!
Here’s what happened in “Mother Author Laser Pointer” on Bob’s Burgers
The episode begins with the Belcher siblings getting ready for school and Linda freaking out about them going to college. While they’re there, an author comes into the restaurant, needing to use their phone for a tow and they find out she’s a favorite author of the family: B. Crawford. Linda is confused as to why she gave up on her beloved children’s book series.
Meanwhile, at school, the Belcher siblings try to help Mr. Frond get his cat from a tree and Linda accidentally sends B. Crawford’s tow truck away. The author immediately gets annoyed with Linda being persistent after she finds out she canceled the truck and then took her keys. To get away from her, B. decides to go into Mort’s funeral home.
Eventually, Gene figures out that they should use the laser pointer to help Mr. Frond get his cat down from the tree which works out. As for Linda, she ends up apologizing to B. Crawford and the author tells her what she wants to hear so she’ll be left alone which results in Linda getting restrained.
The episode ends with Linda explaining that she wanted her to write another book so she could spend more time with the kids but B. explains it’s worth it as having the kids grow up is what needs to happen.
“Mother Author Laser Pointer” takes Linda to an entirely new low
If there’s one thing I can commend Bob’s Burgers on, it’s having great characters. That’s not to say the show doesn’t miss sometimes. While I do feel like this was poised to be a great Linda episode, it was also absurd. I won’t sit here and act like writing a storyline for Linda is easy, I’m sure it’s not.
However, “Mother Author Laser Pointer” felt less like a good Linda episode and one that made Linda seem crazy and not in a good way. I know Linda wanted to try and find a way to connect with this author and convince her of something. I do think there was a better way she could have done that and formed a connection that didn’t result in her being restrained.
Maybe I’m getting a bit more cynical as season 13 goes on but I really feel like this was a missed opportunity for Linda. Coupled with the fact that the episode aired on Mother’s Day, it didn’t work for me. For once, Bob’s Burgers had a rare miss in my eyes.
Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
