The Little Mermaid (2023) swims into theaters this Friday, May 26, and we couldn’t be more excited! It seems like the perfect movie to enjoy with the whole family, but many parents still want to be sure the movie is appropriate for kids. Here’s the age rating for The Little Mermaid (2023) and what parents need to know.

These days, it’s all about reboots and remakes. Unfortunately, these have not always been a hit with audiences (or critics). Still, we are keeping our fingers crossed for the live action take of Ariel and Eric’s love story. Audiences of all ages are looking forward to watching this movie on the big screen.

Halle Bailey stars as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, and Melissa McCarthy as the evil Ursula. The movie also stars Simone Ashley, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, and Javier Bardem. Now, let’s get into why the movie is rated PG.

Is The Little Mermaid (2023) appropriate for kids?

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is rated PG for some scary images as well as scenes of action and peril. Then, over at Common Sense Media, we get a few more details and notice that the animated version is recommended for ages six and up, while the 2023 movie is recommended for kids eight and up.

The source also shares that the scenes are more frightening than the animated version, and it’s easy to understand why. Cartoon sharks and villains are not nearly as scary as CGI creatures. Other than this, there’s nothing to worry about! Ariel and Eric flirt, there are light insults such as “idiot” and “bird brain,” but nothing you’ll need to talk to your kid about on the ride back home.

All in all, this is definitely a movie to watch with everyone in the family. I also recommend watching The Little Mermaid (2023) on the big screen! As for the streaming release, there’s no official date, but we’ll update you as soon as we learn more.
